WHY I WROTE DEMYSTIFYING PANS/PANDAS
AND BASAL GANGLIA ENCEPHALITIS
I have been a pediatrician for almost 30 years, working in functional medicine for over 23 years, and with children with PANS, PANDAS and BGE for over 12 years. I have spent the past few years writing Demystifying PANS/PANDAS to help other medical professionals and health practitioners understand PANS/PANDAS and BGE. I believe that fewer children and families will suffer from the pain of undiagnosed or incompletely treated illness if more practitioners around the world know how to recognize and treat this disease.
I have written this book as a guide to understanding and diagnosing PANS/PANDAS/BGE, as well as designing effective and integrated patient treatment plans, and working with families to manage PANS/PANDAS/BGE over the long-term.
I hope it serves as a valuable resource for you and your practice.

In this book, Nancy O’Hara MD, compassionate leader, lecturer, and practitioner of integrative medicine lays out her extensive knowledge and expertise in treating children with serious and complex chronic illness. When I first met Nancy in the 1990’s she was a young allopathic pediatrician who wanted to ‘hang out’ with me to see how an integrative physician’s approach differed in treating the mysteries of chronic illness. Brilliant and open, she adopted and built on my simple question when confronting a chronically ill child: Does this child have special unmet needs to get, avoid, or get rid of something that if taken care of would favor Nature’s strong impulse toward healing? I am honored and humbled to have mentored Nancy for many years and fortunate to now call her my friend. Most importantly, you are fortunate to be able to learn from her and hopefully work with her in your journey to healing our children. How can I ever thank Nancy enough for the growth she brought to the few seeds I scattered into her garden so long ago.

Demystifying PANS PANDAS: a functional medicine desktop reference on Basal Ganglia Encephalitis and the accompanying mentor program by Nancy O'Hara MD, MPH, FAAP is the penultimate functional medicine resource long needed by the community. Dr. O'Hara is one of the finest integrative doctors in the country, who gathers her years of experience in treating this devastating disorder into these invaluable resources. As a community advocate, I continually witness the dire need for more clinicians who are thoroughly educated and well-versed in treating PANS PANDAS. The mentor program will comprehensively bolster the material imparted in the guidebook. Knowing that Dr. O'Hara is at the helm of this program provides much-needed hope for the PANS PANDAS community.
